The Life & Legacy of Maryam Muhammad
Maryam Muhammad was born in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. on October 18, 1929. She was a proud student of the U.S.V.I. public school system. Upon the completion of her education, she worked at the Knud Hanssen Memorial Hospital for nineteen years. There she cared for newborn babies. In 1959, Maryam relocated to New York and worked at the New York Hospital again, in the nursery caring for newborns. In 1975 she returned home to St Thomas, U.S.V.I. to open her very own daycare: The Muhammad Day Care Center. This was the second licensed and registered daycare center on the island. In 1989 Maryam was an empty nester and transitioned her home into a foster home. Once again, she embarked on a journey caring for newborn babies in need of care. Maryam Muhammed fostered fifty-three children and eventually adopted three of her foster children. In 2003 she was named “Foster Parent of the Year”. As her adopted children left the nest, she was finally ready to assume the role as a traveling grandmother, cruising and crafting memories.
